Oldham Optical: News & Miscellaneous
December 2010
Well it has been another busy year for Oldham Optical. A new member of staff joined the team recently as the work load has increased. New custom has come in from the surveillance and industrial sector, wanting an array of various optical systems. New astronomical customers from all over the globe are now requesting our optics. This year we have exported our work to customers in North America, the Middle East, Southern Asia and mainland Europe.
We are currently trialling new techniques in the work shop to improve our services. We have been using "Supremax" glass supplied by Schott (see last post ). We have been very impressed with the results regarding working the glass and it's ability to produce good optical surfaces.
We have at present an order for two 600mm diameter F/8 Ritchey–Chrétien Cassegrain systems to make for one of our overseas customers. Work has started on these and will be completed early in the new year.
Below is a photograph of my new assistant Simon holding one of the 600mm diameter primary mirrors we have started work on.

To all our customers, readers and friends, we wish a Happy Christmas and a prosperous New Year.

June 2009 - New Glass?
In mid 2009, Schott have introduced a new glass that has possibilities for larger mirrors. Its makeup is similar to Suprax, but it is available in sheets up to 1m wide. Depending on the cost, - which we think will be about twice that of Suprax/Pyrex, - it may be very useful for mirrors in the range say 400mm to 1000mm in diameter.
